Matthäus Merian (1593 – 1650), born in Basel in 1593, learned the art of copperplate engraving in Zürich. He worked and studied in Strasbourg, Nancy and Paris, before moving to Frankfurt in 1616 where he spent most of his life working as an independent publisher. He produced numerous engravings depicting scenes from battles, town plans and views, as well as maps of many countries, which formed the core of his famous series called “Topographia Germaniae” and the “Theatrum Europaeum”. At his death on 1650 his sons Matthäus Jr. took over the publishing house continuing publishing the works of the father under the name Merian Erben (i.e. Merian Heirs).
